Famtree is an outdated program that does not incorporate the power of the computer or today’s programming capabilities. Without automated functions, you do all the work in twice the time.
The data entry form for individuals is incomplete. Fine for an address book, but insufficient for genealogy work. No automatic date formatting and you’ll have to click a button to repeat an address. You can enter names, occupation, address, phone, email, birth and death details, and notes. Source is available for birth and death only. You’ll go to a second screen to add, amend or delete a marriage, but there are no additional fields for events and attributes—standard in genealogical software. Famtree links to its website with additional links to several research sites. Only the most standard report and chart formats are available.
Linking individuals into family groups is an unnecessary extra step. Other programs do this automatically. Famtree adds steps at every stage of the family tree building process, and earns a very low score in ease of use.
Famtree requires you to link all of your individuals by hand, limits individual information, and offers few report and chart options. More work, every step of the way, and unsatisfactory results. Look to our side-by-side comparison chart of genealogy software for better options.
